Peter Cushing Tells Why We Play War Games

I found this little gem on Facebook (or is it Meta now) and saved it. If anyone ever asks you why you play with Little Men then cite Peter Cushing's take on the hobby.

I find myself worrying about what people will think when they learn that I war game. Oftentimes they are fascinated by my hobby and ask me lots and lots of questions about it. I guess that the take away is this:

Enjoy your hobby and don't worry about what anyone else thinks about it.

  1. Couldn't agree more. Be comfortable with who you are and never feel you have to apologize for your hobby. Life's way too short to spend it pretending to be someone else.

  2. Its our hobby and we all own it, I have and will always be proud of our hobby. Never have I felt the need to apologize for the enjoyment I derive from pushing my toys across the table in the belief that I may be representing some form of tactical battle. Using my limited tactical ability to maybe win the odd game, after all its all down to the dice.
Stay safe, happy gaming and a Happy New Year to everyone.

    Willz.

  3. One of the only benefits of growing oder (just turned 60) is with each passing year I could care less what people think of me. I have mentioned many times at work now about my "toy soldiers" and wargaming. When I get snide remarks, I will comment on their pastimes and how I find that theirs is a waste of time. They always either shut up, or then start asking me more about the hobby.

    1. Yes, it’s nice to be able to not care about what anyone else thinks. I tell myself, “so what, I’ll never see them again anyway”. 😄

  5. The only problem Jim is that a lot and I mean a lot of folk wont know who the wonderful Peter Cushing was.A couple of years ago a series of his hand painted flags appeared on E Bay, they were really finely painted standards.

  6. Totally agreed. I like Edward Woodward's introduction to the first episode of Battleground, and of course Peter Young's introduction to Charge which is quoted on my blog.

  7. When I tell people I collect, paint and wargame with toy soldiers I regard it as an intelligence test.

  8. I do understand your expressed feelings of concern about what people will think - even though I am closing in on sixty myself ( eight months to go..God knows how THAT happened!), I still would not share that info with any old person who asked me about hobbies......all our neighbours are aware ( because we are a pretty social bunch and my wife often had to explain my absence on a Friday night when the rest of them were having a few end if the working week libations! Ditto most of my work colleagues....after giving evasive answers about what I got up to with seven other guys at Tarawera for a week each year, I came clean a couple of years back...but it's not something I really discuss with anyone on a regular basis, except other gamers of course! I would not, fir example, tell people outside wargaming about my blog......
