The next items in Der Alte Fritz's fabulous Summer Sale of Soldiers consist of a nice collection of 28mm American Civil War (ACW) mounted and dismounted cavalry, from a variety of sources. All of the figures were painted by Dennis Smail, of Lexington, Kentucky. There are three parts of the collection: the Redoubt Union dismounted cavalry, the CSA mounted and dismounted cavalry brigade, and finally, a regiment of Union cavalry with its dismounts. A discount of approximately 10% is available for anyone wishing to buy all three lots at one time.

Redoubt Union Dismounted Cavalry (44 figures - $300.00)

The Redoubt figures are mounted on single bases, 3/4 - inch wooden squares except for several figures firing from the kneeling position, which required larger bases. There are also two pair of horse holder stands (1 horse holder with 4 horses). The figures are painted to an exceptionally high quality and they have a lot of character and animation to them. It seems as if no two figures are identical. You could leave the figures "as is" on single stands, or rebase them to your favorite rules system. If you game the ACW, you certainly need cavalry to screen your lines, or to race ahead to secure a vital terrain feature and fight dismounted, while awaiting the arrival of the Union infantry.

The Union cavalry depicted in the second lot are painted to a decent standard and have seen a fair amount of table top action over the years. The figures come from a wide variety of companies including Connoisseur, Dixon, Eagle and possibly a few others. Many of the figures have been converted via head swaps, new arms, additional carbines or pistols attached to the figure, neckerchiefs/bandanas, and other modest changes. The regiment does not depict any particular Union regiment, so you could add your own GMB Designs flag to finish off the regiment in a nice manner. The mounted figures are priced at $6.00 per figure and the dismounts are priced at $4.00 per figure.

As with the Union cavalry regiment, the two regiments shown in the pictures above include a nice variety of figures from different manufacturers. The mix of figures gives each regiment a certain degree of individuality and lends itself to a nice campaign appearance to the brigade. Each regiment of 20 mounted figures also has one horse holder stand and 15 dismounted figures. The mounted figures are based two per stand (2" squares) and the dismounts are based 3 figures per stand. It would be relatively easy to rebase the figures to match your existing collection or rules set, or leave them as is.

I don't know how you feel about ACW cavalry, but they were always the last thing that I wanted to paint when I was building my armies. This sale presents a wonderful opportunity to pick up some nicely painted, ready to game figures at a very reasonable price.

SOLD! -- I have more unpainted Perry Scots horse, Moss Troopers and a regiment of Scots musketeers that I could custom paint for any interested party.

I am placing a small contingent of ECW Perry figures on the sale block. There is one 18-figure cuirassier regiment (single stands 1" by 2") and a 48- figure regiment of Montrose's Highlanders, plus a small artillery piece and crew and three mounted officers, including a Montrose personality figure. All figures are Perry ECW figures and are painted to a high standard.

The infantry figures are single mounted on 3/4" square metal bases so they are suitable for Warhammer ECW or 1644 or almost any other rules system. Many of the Highlanders have plaid blankets or cloaks or trews while the balance are wearing the Hodden Grey uniform. There are 12 pikemen and the rest are armed with muskets. I have some Body's Banners that I will include and these will finish off the look of the regiment very nicely.

I also have many boxes of unpainted Perry ECW Scots available for sale if anyone is interested. Let me know and I will provide an inventory of what I have and some deep discount prices on the unpainted lead. I was going to sell my RSM SYW French army too, but after laying the whole thing out on a table to photograph, I realized that this is a one of a kind army that could never be replicated. I will post some eye candy pictures over the next several days (403 infantry and artillery and command figures plus 144 cavalry). Former RSM major domo, Dennis Smail, painted this entire army for me. Alas, Dennis has retired from painting so I would not be able to commission him to recreate this army. So it truly is a "one of a kind" and a true "keeper". That said, I would still entertain offers for the whole thing lock, stock and barrel.

Continuing on with Der Alte Fritz's Famous Summer Sale, I am posting my version of His Britannic Majesty's Army in Western Germany under the command of Prince Ferdinand of Brunswick. This colorful army includes one British brigade of 3 line regiments of 30 figures (including a 6-figure grenadier stand per regiment), one 24-figure 87th Kieth's Highlanders, and one 24-figure converged grenadier battalion. The British brigade also includes a pair of 6-pound artillery pieces and two mounted commanders: Colonel Beckwith and Lt. General Waldegrave. The figures are roughly priced at $6.00 each for a total brigade price of $900.00.

The Hanoverian brigade consists of four battalions (each 24-figures) of infantry, one battalion (24 figures) of Hanoverian freikorps, 15 Hessian jagers, two 6-pound artillery pieces and crew, and Major General von Sporken. There is also a command stand for Prince Ferdinand that consists of three mounted figures on one stand. The figures are priced at around $6.00 each or $900.00 for the whole brigade.

I could probably be talked into selling the regiments individually or in pairs, at a price of $150 per regiment, but it would be a shame to break up this beautiful army into ten or twenty pieces.

If anyone is interested in purchasing the entire army in one fell swoop, then I can provide a discount of $300 and offer the entire army at $1,500.00. Postage and insurance are extra.

Four stands of converged British grenadiers (Maxwell's Grenadiers perhaps?). The brigade also has three other stands of grenadiers attached to the 12th, 8th and 51st regiments, so you could have as many as seven stands of converged grenadiers.

This is one of my favorite armies in the 18th century and it has been nicely recreated in miniature with well painted figures, colorful flags and textured basing to enhance the overall look. The detail work on the grenadiers is very good and the hand painted flags, particularly the Hanoverian flags, are amazing. The majority of the figures were painted by Leonard Albright of Lexington, KY, who also painted the flags. I painted the Highlanders, the two Front Rank Hanoverian regiments, the Front Rank Hanoverian freikorps and the Hanoverian artillery. Dennis Smail painted the Hessian Jagers.

Summer Sale Update

All of the Austrians, the Bavarians and Prussian cavalry have all found new homes. I want to thank everyone for their purchases and look forward to shipping orders out this week and next week. In some cases, units are being rebased, others are being amalgamated and touched up with matching facing colors, and in several instances, I am painting extra figures to fill out the unit to the customer's specifications. I am starting my summer vacation next week, so taking care of orders should keep me fairly busy.

Scruby Prussian Fusiliers for Sale: $245.00 (58 foot + 1 Mounted Officer)
There is one unit that is feeling a bit lonely, and that is the fine Scruby Prussian fusilier regiment IR42 Wied (58 foot and 1 mounted officer - a Spencer Smith one piece plastic figure). This is about as Old School as one can get. The unit is very attractively painted and at $4.00 per figure, represents very good value for the lucky owner of this battalion. The figures have not been based yet, so they could be set up on single stands or grouped together on multi-figure stands.

The sale of RSM Austrians is nearly over, I only have the six battalions of figures in advancing poses left for sale. The Bavarians are next in the sale que, and this fine brigade was painted by Bill Biles using RSM Austrians as stand ins for the Bavarians. The brigade consists of five battalions: Lieb Regiment, Minucci, Clemens, Morowitzski, and Kurprinz. There are also two 6-pounders with three crew each and one mounted brigade general. Each battalion is mounted four figures per stand with five stands per regiment. The flags were hand painted and photocopied. The standard of painting is fairly good, although not done with the two or three tone painting style that seems popular today.

Dixon Prussian Dragoon Regt. DR3 Meinicke (20 figures) SOLD!

I am offering a nice Prussian dragoon regiment, comprised of that little known range of Dixon figures, painted as DR3 von Meinicke. The pink or rose facings are very unusual and add some nice color to the tabletop. It is a 20 figure regiment based on 2" square stands and includes a hand painted flag. Bill Biles painted the regiment for me back in the 1990s. The figures are a little larger than the RSM figures, but I think that they look just fine along side RSM cavalry, in terms of overall size and proportions. RSM Austrians Re-based

RSM Austrian Regiment "Kollowrat" with their new bases.

The great RSM Summer Sale has been fairly successful so far, with 8 battalions preparing for transfer to new ownership. One of the buyers had me rebase his new battalions on 2-inch square bases for "Might & Reason" rules, but these bases could just as easily be used for Black Powder, BAR, Age of Reason or even Rusty's Rules. I thought that I would show you the before and after views of the battalions, i.e. with the old form of basing versus my new method of basing figures. The following two pictures depict the Austrian regiment Neipperg in its "before" and "after" method of basing. The figures are RSM figures painted by Bill Biles, circa 1994.

The old system called for gluing the figures onto plastic bases and then covering the bases with some spackling compound, then dipped in flock. It was cutting edge in 1994, but looks rather tired and out of date by today's standards. The painting is average because we largely did not shade and highlight our figures back then. Indeed, my own painting style has improved and changed over the years.

I had to rebase all of the battalions, so I stuck them in the freezer for about an hour, in order to loosen the bond of the superglue that I had originally used to glue the figures to their bases. In most cases, the figures popped right off the plastic base, but it was a bit of a chore to cut and hack up the old bases. Once the figures were loose, I then took an exacto knife and scraped off all of the remaining spackle compound that was still on the figure's base, so that they would be nice and clean for their new bases. Finally, I had some nice Litko bases, sized at 2-inch square, on hand and I used these for my customer's new basing. I highly recommend the Litko bases. They are inexpensive, but they look very nice and have clean cuts so that every base matches up snug and true to the next one.


The righthand stand of figures was painted the other day in order to fill out the regiment with "march attack" poses. I tried to copy the style of the other figures, that I painted back in the 1990s. See if you can tell the difference.

The client asked for six battalions all in the march attack pose, which I was able to do, save for one unit (Kolowrat) that was short about 9 march attack figures. So luckily, I had some RSM Austrians already primed and ready to paint, so I was able to paint up the extra figures very quickly. RSM figures paint up fast and easy, which is one of the reasons I like them. Then I decided that having only one flag per battalion did not look right. So I decided to reflag the units with brand new GMB Designs flags that I had on hand. This meant that I also had to paint up six new flag bearers so that each battalion would have two, instead of one. In most cases, I clipped off the old flag and replaced with a new GMB flag, while the new flag bearers were painted from scratch.

I think that you will agree that the end result justifies the extra effort. The new basing really brings the figures to life and the two new flags adds a spiffy touch to the unit. This is an example of the type of service that you get when you buy figures from Der Alte Fritz.

RSM Austrian Summer Sale

I have decided to sell off all of my RSM SYW Austrian and Prussian armies. This is a rather emotional thing for me, since some of these figures were among my first ever wargame units and I have fought a lot of enjoyable battles with them over the years. I need to reinvest the proceeds into other projects, mainly some needed home repairs. Eventually, I will replace these with my Minden armies, but after giving it some long thought, I decided that I do not need to have three different SYW armies.

I have grouped the Austrians into three lots of figures. All three lots have a nice variety of infanty, cavalry and some artillery plus mounted generals. So you can start with a nice brigade of Austrians from any of these lots. I have also grouped the figures by facing colors for those of you who might be interested in combining the battalions into "Big Battalions" for BAR or Charge rules. As is, they are 30 figure infantry units and 20 figure cavalry units that would be suitable for a number of rules such as Black Powder, Age of Reason, and Rustys Rules, to name a few.

The Austrians are priced reasonably at about $4.00 per infantry and artillery figure and $5.00 per cavalry figure. The painting style is "average" with no shading or 2 or 3 tone painting. In some cases, the cross belts have been lined. All figures have eyes that are done very nicely and avoid the bug-eyed look. My painting style and abilities have changed considerably since I first painted these figures, so I am not pricing them at my current market rates for painted figures. However, they look nice and will give you a nice brigade or two that is ready for battle.

Lot #1: $750 plus shipping

The first group includes two battalions in red facings and two battalions in blue facings. You could easily group them into two 60 figure units for BAR or Charge, or keep them as 30 figure units. There are six figures per stand and five stands per battalion. One of the stands in each battalion is a grenadier stand, so you could detach and converge the four grenadier stands to create one 24 figure grenadier battalion and have four 24 figure musketeer battalions.

The second lot of Austrian figures contains two battalions of 30 figures in green facings and all in the advancing pose. Thus they could be converged into one 60 figure battalion for BAR or Charge rules. These are the Los Rios and the Luzan regiments.

There are also two battalions in violet facings: Gaisruck and Sachsen Gotha, so again, they could be converged into one battalion.

The Lot#2 cavalry include the first two cavalry regiments that I ever painted: the Baranyai Hussars and the de Ligne Dragoons.

Lot #3: $850 plus shipping

Lot #3: five battalions of musketeers, one btn of Croats, 20 Old Glory dragoons and an officer stand with two figures.

The third lot of figures contains figures that may or may not match up well for larger units. There are three battalions in red facings that could be grouped together to get one super large 90 figure battalion or two 45 figure battalions or three 30 figure battalions. Then I have added two other blue facing battalions with a mix of marching and advancing figures.

The lot also includes one Old Glory Austrian dragoon regiment (de Ligne) and one Old Glory Croat battalion of 24 figures. The Croats were painted by Leonard Albright of Lexington, KY and I painted the dragoons in my "middle period" so they have some shading and blacklining to them and are painted to a higher standard than my other figures in these three lots.

I will be happy to work with you in terms of getting the figures shipped in a timely manner, or if you would like to have the figures rebased in a more modern style, we could work something out for the extra time spent on the rebasing. They could be rebased with static grass and gravel with multiple figures on each base, or as single based figures.
